This year, I ditched the New Year’s Resolutions and instead opted to set myself 18 goals and intentions for 2018 (you can read all about that here).  As part of my own accountability and to hopefully help inspire you to stay on track or get on board with your own goals, I’m posting on my progress every month.  I’m not going to talk about each goal – we’ll be here all day – so I’m just going to pick out the ones I’ve been working on (or not!) this month.

Run 1,000 miles in 2018

Following a pretty bad June, I resolved to knuckle down in July and run everyday. The result?

125.65 miles

That’s over 80 miles more than June. Boom!

This is now how things look (on 4 August):

Running every day has made such a difference, not just to the mileage but to my mindset. There is no questionning of whether or not I feel like going for a run today. I get up, clean my teeth (an old habit from my military days where just cleaning your teeth after a broken night’s sleep on exercise is guarenteed to wake you up), and put my trainers on.  I get up early these days, consistently an 6am, even on the weekends – alright, maybe i allow myself a little lie-in to 7am on a Sunday but it’s so hot at the moment, I have to go out first thing.

It might sound silly but I’m really proud of myself this month. I could have given up but my persistence kicked in and I achieved what I set out to do. Now, if I only I could apply this to some of the other areas of my life!

Read at least 24 books

I’ve nearly made it through my stash of books! I even went back to a couple of books I’ve read before this month. My Amazon basket currently has about £600 of books in it so there’s no shortage of reading material for the rest of the year…

This month, I read We: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere by Gillian Anderson and Jennifer Nader. This had been on my list then I serendipitously was given a copy at a TedX event a couple of months ago. They cover nine principles to help create change in women’s lives. There are some really good tips and advice in here and I love the way they connect individual change with collective change – a theme very close to my heart and business. Reading this has started to shape some of my own thoughts for the book I would like to write one day!

I went back and re-read Steven Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Orginially published nearly 20 years ago, this remains one of the best books ever written on productivity and mindset. I love Covey’s ability to combine practical and spiritual techniques to improve people’s lives, again very much aligned with my approach to life. Whether you’ve read this before or not, you should read it soon.

And for a bit of light relief, I also re-read Night School: (Jack Reacher 21) by Lee Child. It’s a (not-very) guilty pleasure.

Do one new thing/go to one new place every month

I went to not one but two new and inspiring events this month that I want to share. First up was Special Guest. It’s is an open mic night where the audience are the speakers. 60 seconds. On stage. No slides. Props are allowed. Share whatever you want.

I happened to go at the end of an emotional rollercoaster of a day. Hearing so many stories about every aspect of life and sharing my own thoughts and feelings in front of a group of strangers was cathartic and uplifting and deeply moving.

I then went back to school for the day courtesy of The Weekend University – a full day of talks from leading psychologists and university professors. I learnt all about existenial therapy, Jung, Maslow, and the science of a meaningful life.

I’m plotting to do another Masters’ degree soon so I loved getting my learning on for the day!

The Month in Review

I’m not really sure how I feel about July in hindsight, which is strange. I know at the time I generally felt energised and productive and strong and yet, as I write this in early August, it feels like the shine has worn off a little. Maybe I just need to eat more cake to keep with all those miles! Or maybe I’m just feeling the impact the persistent hot weather is having on my sleep. Or maybe it’s just that point in my menstural cycle.

Regardless, as I looked back over my calendar, I was pretty impressed by the sheer amount I managed to do and how much fun I had along the way. So maybe I should give myself a bit of a break, practice some self-compassion and go eat cake 🍰
